English Visit 1997

In 1997, Irene Reasons and I visited England and attended two shows- one championship show and one open show, where Irene judged.  These are some pictures from our visit:

Irene below with the elusive Himalayan Blue Poppy - Meconopsis betonicifolia- is one of those plants that captures the imagination, but never fails to let you down once you start trying to grow it yourself.

Originating from the lush, mountainous regions of south-eastern Tibet, this almost magical plant will require a cool, sheltered position in order to survive. However, the trick with this particular plant is to be able to provide it with an acidic, moist, yet free draining soil that won’t dry out – especially during the summer months.  I have never been able to grow it, but they were beautiful at Ness Botanical Gardens near Liverpool, U.K.

Winnie Mee's Ch. Tenling Golden Arrow at Pekehuis- Top Peke in The U.K. at the time... Winnie let Irene have her hand at brushing him up for the pictures.  He was a sound, extremely healthy Peke.  He was sturdy with lots of stamina and as solid as a rock under his coat.  He lived to a ripe old age under Winnie's doting care and is an example of how outcross blood can promote vigor.

Anthea's Everitt's Kushan Kennel was closely aligned with Pekehuis at the time...
